STORM TRACK LONG ISLAND: LIRR PTS62

click photo for full size Living alongside the LIRR tracks, I sometimes hear odd diesels outside my window. On the night of the pre-New Years Blizzard, this beauty appeared and I rushed outside to capture a rare bird at work. The double ended Plasser-American dynamic track stabilizer had a snow plow/blower, and brush unit at each end. The crew awaited repair of side brushes which clear the third rail.

The PTS unit is normally used during track work, after balast has been laid; via off center flywheels, it shakes the tracks and balast so that the balast settles and locks into place.
