The day before New Year's Eve 2001 a foot of snow stopped New York City cold. The airports were shut down; but the trains were still running! The next day, on Dec. 31st, we went to overlooks above the Sunnyside, Long Island, yards in Queens to capture the scene. Amtrak trains formed up and shunted into position, and snow blowers cleared the tracks, while the Long Island Rail Road and elevated subways rumbled past in the distance. Sometimes, being a railfan is sooooo good!
